I'm an artist as well. I love to sketch and have gotten into acrylics as of the last year, but I have NO watercolor talent. I'm wondering about your technique. Is it just something you played around with or is there a technique to it? I love when it gets outside the lines...but whenever I've tried it, it just looks like I've smeared the paint on accident. Not so pleasant.

Ahahaha, honestly… I have no technique. I suppose that’s it though, not knowing what the hell I’m doing is my technique.

I’m rather new to watercoloring myself. I use it in two ways. If I have what I want to do in mind I go ahead and sketch it out in pencil first and then go over it with watercolors then ink. Ambird has a wonderful video on the same process that helped me out when I started using watercolors (I too was an acrylic girl when I needed some color.)

My second system and what I use more often is I just blend and splash watercolors at random on paper. I play around until I think the colors reach their best with one another. (I don’t try to paint outside the lines because the paint is ALREADY outside the lines, see.) I let it dry and then I just stare at the paper. Sometimes ideas pop up during the watercoloring process but most of the time I just stare. I stare until I see something and then I sketch whatever it is I see in pencil and go over it with ink. I’ve come to learn this is a very useful exercise when I’m going through some kind of block and reminds me that my imagination is still in check.

That’s it. I suggest you keep at it. Keep experimenting, eventually you’ll get the hang of it. I have to say that once the watercolors entered my life, I haven’t looked back. I still can’t believe I used acrylics for so many years.

Much luck and I hope this was somewhat helpful.
